Football in Germany has often taken a major backseat to other popular European sports such as soccer or basketball, yet out almost every major European country, there may be non-more intertwined with the NFL’s growing stature overseas than Germany.

The country had previously witnessed great success in the World League of American Football (or NFL Europe) which was established in 1991 before running until 2007, with this division focusing on delivering minor league football to a number of high-profile European destinations.

Of all major European teams, the German clubs would usually reign supreme with the likes of the Hamburg Sea Devils, Berlin Thunder, and Frankfurt Galaxy all being amongst the prior winners of the event as well as the Rhein Fire and Cologne Centurions who joined the league in 1995 and 2004 respectfully before the competition folded.

The success brought about by the NFL Europa league has certainly kept most German audiences eager to witness more football action in the coming years, and with league commissioner Roger Goodell announcing that the NFL will be present in Germany this year, the country will once again bear witness to more action from the most popular sporting league in the States.

On November 13th, two of the league’s most well-respected franchises in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks will class on the prestigious field present at the Allianz Arena, home of the Bayern Munich soccer team that has since reigned supreme over Germany’s top flight division for over a decade.

While the Seahawks may not be in the conversation surrounding a potential championship run anytime soon, they do however bolster one of the league’s most passionate fanbases and have since become a worldwide phenomenon since their dramatic path to their first and only world championship trophy at Superbowl XLVIII back in 2013.

Following on from their first ever victory at the Superbowl event back in 2002, the Buccaneers have largely been a dormant franchise before they acquired superstar Quarterback Tom Brady in 2019, with the legendary star name eventually leading the Bucs to their second ever Superbowl in 2020, collecting his seventh championship ring in the process.

  • Why is Germany one of the premier destinations for future overseas NFL outings?

It is estimated that the German market remains as the most viable and highly popular sectors in throughout Europe when discussing countries that have amassed the most following towards NFL broadcasts.

With an estimated 19 million football fans across the country and 3.8% of the population admitting that football remains as their all-time favorite sport, Germany is certainly not lacking in fanbases and intrigue towards any NFL franchise and as such is a perfect destination for any future league encounters.
